Playwrights Project Camp

Searching for something creative and fulfilling for your student to do in North County this summer? Look no further! Playwrights Project Camp will guide students through writing a play that will be performed by professional actors on the last day of camp. This five day camp is taught by teaching artist Aleta Barthell.

Karen Hartman
Karen was recently named a Guggenheim Fellow by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Karen, now an esteemed playwright and theatre educator, was honored with the Deborah Salzer Excellence in Arts Education Award in 2018. Her plays In My Mother's House and And One Bell Shattered were produced in the 1986 and 1987 Plays by Young Writers Festivals.
Thomas Hodges
Thomas's script Stage Directions was produced in the 2007 Plays by Young Writers Festival. His new musical Underground: An Urban Tale will receive a reading at the New York Musical Festival this fall. Thomas returned to Plays by Young Writers this past season as a Composition Mentor to Naomi Melville, the playwright of Trash! The Musical.

Want to see Thomas's work onstage? You're in luck! Go see Dear Harvey at Diversionary Theatre this weekend on Friday, July 12th at 2pm and Saturday, July 13th at 4:30pm.
Mariah MacCarthy
Mariah published their first book, a young adult novel entitled Squad. Earlier this year, Barnes and Noble's Teen Blog included their book as one of the Most Anticipated LGBTQAP YA Books of 2019. In an interview with Lambda Literary, Mariah gives insight into their writing process and the thought behind their characters. Mariah's script A Man of His Word was produced in the 2005 Plays by Young Writers Festival.
