A Message from Playwrights Project about Budget Cuts to the Arts
As many of you know, Mayor Todd Gloria’s proposed FY27 budget removes virtually all City Arts and Culture funding, eliminating a total of $11.8 million dollars that currently supports organizations doing essential work across San Diego. Our Arts and Culture sector is a huge economic driver, employing thousands of artists, and providing programming that fosters community, health, connection and belonging.
Playwrights Project has relied on City Operating Support for many years. This is critical funding that covers general operating costs and allows us to continue providing high-quality services to underserved populations when specific project grants do not cover the whole of the work we do. Our programs with justice and system impacted youth, individuals returning from incarceration, and people in recovery, generate connection and healing. Our work contributes to a safer and healthier San Diego for all. And we are just one of many organizations whose operations will be limited or eliminated if this budget were to pass – museums, schools, historical landmarks, cultural centers, music and visual arts programs will all be affected.
We need your help to protect arts funding in San Diego. There is still time to influence the Council’s final budget decisions.

Following the rally, the City Council budget hearing will begin at 6:30 p.m., and we are encouraging advocates to stay and participate in public comment.
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
• Attend the rally on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
• Stay for the City Council hearing at 6:30 p.m. and give public comment if you can
• Wear your arts organization shirts if you have them
• Bring handmade signs
• Post on social media and encourage others to attend (graphics available here or use your own!)
• Forward this email to your networks, patrons, boards, students, and supporters
This movement has brought together hundreds of artists, nonprofit leaders, educators, performers, cultural workers, and community members from every corner of San Diego. Our collective voice has already made an impact, and we must finish strong.
